BackKenilworth School KS4 Girls Crowned National Squash Champions!
Posted on: 14/03/2025Kenilworth School’s KS4 Girls squash team has achieved a historic victory, being crowned National Champions at the prestigious finals held yesterday at Edgbaston Priory Club, Birmingham. Competing against the top schools from all corners of England, Kenilworth’s triumph is even more remarkable as they were facing a field dominated by private schools.
The finals day consisted of the top eight teams who had all progressed to the final stage after coming through earlier group knockout rounds. As the No. 1 seeded team going into the day, the pressure was on for the girls to live up to expectations—and they didn’t disappoint. Winning their first match 5-0 against Bedford School saw them advance to the semi-finals, where they faced a strong Lincoln Minster School. The games were much closer, but once again, the girls dug deep and overcame their opponents with another dominant 5-0 victory.
With the final set, the team knew they would be facing a formidable opponent. When it was confirmed that they would be playing Sevenoaks School from Kent, the No. 2 seeded team, the challenge was on. After the first four matches, the score was tied at 2-2, leaving everything to be decided in the final match. The calmness of Emily shined through as she handled the pressure superbly, securing victory in both her games and clinching the national title. The moment sent the entire team into a frenzy of excitement, celebrating an incredible achievement.
The girls were spurred on by the fantastic support of their families, whose presence on the day provided a significant morale boost. Adding to the occasion, ex-pupil and England & WSA World Professional Sarah-Jane Perry was on hand to support the team, offering invaluable advice and encouragement. Sarah herself competed in this very tournament for Kenilworth School in her younger years, and the event no doubt brought back fond memories for her.
A huge thank you goes out to Kenilworth Squash and Tennis Club, whose unwavering support over the years has been instrumental in developing young squash talent at the school. Without their dedication and resources, fielding competitive teams at this level would not have been possible.
For any students inspired by this incredible achievement and interested in trying squash, we strongly encourage you to get in touch with Kenilworth Squash and Tennis Club. They offer fantastic beginner sessions and are the perfect place to start your squash journey.
Congratulations once again to our National Champions Sophie, Emily, Charlotte, Niamh & Summer – you have done Kenilworth School, your club, and the community proud!
